LYTHGOE DESIGN GROUP'S "3C" MISSION
Create architecture that is Classically-based, Construction-oriented, and Community-centered

CLASSICALLY BASED

Lythgoe Design Group is known for its high-quality, thoughtful architectural designs, which create a sense of community and belonging.

LDG does this by using classical techniques such as the use of historical precedent, sacred geometry and proportion, knowledge and use of indigenous materials, and mindfulness of sustainable urban design.

Founded and based in Heber City, Utah, their diverse portfolio of projects has included high-end residences, multi-use commercial buildings, healthcare facilities, equestrian outbuildings, and cemetery columbaria in cities and rural areas in the western United States.

LDG believes in using local materials and designing buildings that are contextually appropriate with the environment in which they are placed. The use of local materials ties the building into its surroundings and is environmentally responsible. One example of this is Daniel's Summit Lodge that has been a beacon on the hill for outdoor enthusiasts for decades. Patterned after several National Park Lodges, it fits in well with its surroundings and looks like it has always been there.

CONSTRUCTION-ORIENTED

History Photo (1).jpg

The foundation and legacy for Lythgoe Design Group started in 1973 when Lane’s father, Hartley Lythgoe, established Lythgoe Construction Inc. in Heber City, Utah. Starting at the age of 12, Lane would work with his father during the summer months, picking up nails, cleaning the work area, and helping his father work his trade. As the years passed, Lane learned the art of construction and, after fifteen years, had gained a detailed understanding of the trades of general contractor and master builder.

Lythgoe Design Group believes that theoretical knowledge of architecture is insufficient. Hands-on construction experience is essential to gain a thorough understanding of building and architecture. LDG has participated in numerous restoration and construction projects.  Pictured right, Lane Lythgoe climbs onto the Cemetery Administration building pedestal to hang up a 1:1 plot of the words to be engraved in the sandstone plaques.

COMMUNITY-CENTERED

LDG has a reliable and skilled design team and great relationships with builders and engineers to ensure quality through each step of the process. Lythgoe Design Group holds a deep respect for the past and a sensitive vision of the future, allowing them to create designs that benefit our clients, the environment, and the entire community.

Lythgoe Design Group has always had a keen focus on serving the community to make it a better place. One example of this is the Coach Storage Building (pictured to the left). This building was designed and constructed by Lythgoe Design Group and Lythgoe Construction as a community service. A member of the LDG team also serves on the Heber Valley Railroad Advisory board, helping the train plan for the future.

The Wasatch County Recreation Center is another building that is beloved by the community. Lythgoe Design Group saw the need for an indoor recreation facility in the community and took the initiative to turn an abandoned soup factory into a thriving community asset. The warehouse was coupled with an executive office building on the North side, which greatly improved the appeal of this building.

We were also heavily involved in the master planning with Envision 2050 for the Heber Valley. The challenge of preserving the community's identity through the historic built environment while accommodating the enormous growth in the valley is a large and complex task, but one that we do not shy away from.

The Heber Valley Historic Railroad played an important role in the 2002 Olympics in SLC. We have developed a proposal to expand the current operations of the Railroad, creating a masterplan that improves the safety and functionality of the railroad. This masterplan would create a special environment for families and individuals to enjoy the train as well as shopping and restaurant amenities.

Lythgoe Design Group is committed to the traditional architecture community through Utah Valley University and its classical program. Members of the LDG team have been adjunct professors for UVU and supported the program from its inception. The image to the left was featured in The Classicist, Volume 21, and is a concept for a Beaux-Arts Museum in downtown Provo, Utah.

Lythgoe Design Group is invested in helping come up with creative solutions to the affordable housing crisis. Its sister affordable housing company, "Penny Cottages" (pennycottages.com), features research and designs centered around traditional housing that is both affordable and beautiful. The project to the right was featured in The Classicist, Volume 23.
